Hazara people make up about 20% of the population of Afghan people. For many centuries, they have had to deal with discrimination and persecutions from Pashtuns and other ethnic groups. They are distinguished by other Afghans by their Asian features. Most Hazaras live in the mountainous central highlands called Hazarajat. In search of a better life, many have moved to Kabul, where they make up nearly half of the city's population. The main outfit of choice for Hazaras is Perahan-u-tunban, which resembles pajamas. Men normally wear turbans, vests, overcoats, and sweaters over their Perahan-u-tunban. Women usually wear clothes with bright colors and designs. They also wear lighter clothing because they are almost always working inside. In the story, "The Kite Runner", Hassan was a Hazara. He was a servant to Amir and his father, who were Pashtuns. Hazaras will work for anybody just to say that they have a job.
